This is the location of the www email relay for
participation in Sarajevo OnLine. It will continue
to operate past April 7, 1995.....Indefinitely.
This is a call for more participation and
the extension of this "Media Event"
into a more serious
and ongoing communication lifeline.
How can we get the resources to keep the
lines open? Will the telecom companies
support peace?
Don't just exploit this for ratings--
Keep the lines open.
It's time to let people write their own history!
Let's start now.
peace

Before this "Media Event" a.k.a. Sarajevo OnLine,
the ZaMir network has provided practical services
of electronic communication for over two years.
They continue to do this weather or not the media
spotlight is on.
This is a call to all those with resources to
keep the lines open, and help them grow,
because with them comes peace.
The following is an excerpt from the ARKzine article
on ZaMir Network:
(please excuse the html to those ascii readers!)
Set up just over two years ago in a dimly-lit basement in the north German city
of Bielefeld, ``ZaMir'' -- Serbo-Croat for ``towards peace'' -- is a
computerized
collection point and forwards messages to and from former
Yugoslavia.
Two Bielefeld artists, Rena Tangens and her partner who calls himself
Padeluun,
tend 2.6 gigabytes of computer mailbox power that provides a gateway to the
war zone where rebel Serbs are pitted against Croats and Bosnian
Muslims.
Tangens says 500 to 1,000 users are now regularly connected via
nodes in
Sarajevo, Zagreb, Skopje, Belgrade, Ljubljana and Pristina to the
worldwide web
of computer users and the network is expanding
rapidly.
Please help continue tho moves towards peace by supporting
efforts to provide day to day communications facilities.
Let's go beyond the Media Hype and DO SOMETHING
to STOP THE GENOCIDE.
Don't let the established media conceal the truth.
It's time to let people write their own history!
Let's start now.
peace

----------------FORWARDED MESSAGE--------------
>dear collegues in Europe,
>
>writing from Zagreb, on the computer of the alternative
independent newspaper ARKzin I, would like to contribute
a question to your conference about Sarajewo.
>
>Considering that Sarajewo is a symbol of the war
in Ex-Yugoslavia, a symbol of the suffering of
the people of Bosnia and a symbol of
the limits of European power,
I take the liberty of asking you:
>- what makes you think that using this gadget
called E-mail or World Wide Web would change the message
of people who have for three years now told you the same thing:
show the guts and the human decency to stop the siege of this city?
>- if the truth about Sarajewo is known and exploited ad absurdum,
would it not be better to concentrate your resources on exposing
the arrogance and hipocrisy of the European sect of policy-makers?
>- if millons of refugees, hundreds of thousands of dead
and thousands of destroyed towns and villages
are not enough to convince your leaders and their voters
to do more than posing for a portrait f collective impotence,
can+t you think of something better than electronic masturbation to charm your readership?
>- why don+t you e.g. offer one evening Eurovision-time,
or one special edition of your newspaper to collegues from Sarajewo,
or Tuzla or Zenica or Mostar or Pakrac to tell their side of the story?
>
>The people in the countries of post-Yugoslavia
maybe victims of many criminals, but many of us
are not helpless fodder for mediocrats happy to
have a go at your last discovered toys.
Direct access to your editorial terminals,
that would be a nice try.
