Dear Sir/Madam,
Umut Foundation which is an NGO aiming to introduce and apply methods and techniques of peaceful settlement for conflicts not only in Turkey, but also in Europe, South-East Europe and the Middle East; to cooperate with the domestic and foreign NGOs to promote conflict resolution activities at different levels through seminars and conferences; to promote the rule of law by helping people to internalize its importance. The last Conference which was held in Istanbul, April 25 -27, 1997 was a significant step to promote the importance of cooperation among the NGOs not only of Turkey but also of the South-East Europe and Middle East Countries.
Recently, in order to promote friendship in the South-East Europe and to encourage stable policies towards each other, Umut Foundation has prepared a project proposal. The project tackles the issue of "Image of the Other" in hindering or promoting stability and good neighbourliness by the media in South-East Europe. The initial aim of this project is to:
1. Analyze of the news coverage and the editorials of major newspapers in the countries of the region.
2. Collect and exhibit of the cartoons published in the newspapers.
3. Organise a series of meetings with the owners and columnists of selected local news media of each country.
4. Establish a communication network by utilizing the existing resources.
The funding possibility is quite strong. The success of the project depends on the participation and collaboration of the institutions and NGOs in the region. With this purpose we are aiming to create a directory of organisations. We would very much like to know if your organisation would like to participate in this project or if you could name other organisations that would be interested in participating.
If you would like to receive more information on the issue please contact Prof.Dr.Mehmet G|rkaynak, Founding Member and Exec. Board Member. We kindly request your response at your earliest convenience.
We thank you in advance for your assistance and cooperation,
Umut Foundation
