Nationalism is a dirty disease. So is religion in its service. I wish for
all of the people of Yugoslavia (not neo-Yugo but old Yugoslavia)the
freedoms that everyone in America enjoys through our Bill of Rights but
especially freedom for fear. I cannot believe that at the end of the
twentieth century, thinking people of the world did not immediately react
to what was happening in Bosnia, in the Sandzak and in Kosovo, some of
which is still happening today. Too many people looked aside. To many
people thought it convenient to negotiate borders with atrocity committers
and enablers. Too many people allowed fear and hatred to reign in church
and mosque. Now the people of Bosnia and in other parts of Yugoslavia are
manipulated and in danger, Serbs and Croats of good will have been
effectively silenced and live in fear both where you are and abroad, we
have all been placed in a position where we have lost respect for our
leaders and there seem to be no good leaders to be found, we have lost
respect in one of the few institutions we could formerly count on, the
United Nations. After Akashi and Boutros Boutros Ghali, the face of the
U.N. has changed for the next generation to an organization of expediency
from what was formerly an organization of peace.
To whom shall we all cry out in anger and to whom shall we all cry out to
heal? Who is listening to the hungry? Who accounts the peoples's will?
Who makes the rules? Who sets the dates? Is love being taught, or hate?
What can we do to heal? How can we try? May we learn to live together
once again when the tears are dried.
