On Chicken or Egg Conflicts
Rape, perhaps, came before pornography, at least more likely than a
chicken before an egg or an egg before a chicken. Pornography, after
all is a picture (still or animated, with or without sound) of a
sexual act. While making pictures is among us maybe for the dozen
thousands years, rape was with us since the beginning. Even rats are
familiar with rape. They, however, do not publish Playrat (yet).
Pornography came after humans realize that impulses to rape
unfortunately came naturally down the evolution even to them. I don't
know for rats, but in human society rape is very bad thing and it can
actually destroy well being of that society as a whole (that's why
military commanders ALWAYS, and in the most recent Serbian example,
with a plenty of the end-of-the-twentieth-century finesse, used rape
as a weapon against the perceived enemy). So, lucid as they are
humans came up with a form of passive rape: you sit at home, watch a video
and jerk-off. In your mind you engaged in sex with the on-screen
character, which in hers/his mind never gave the consent to sex with
you. In other words in your mind you committed a virtual rape. Yet,
there is no victim (as long, of course, as the actors are not kept as
sex slaves chained to some drug habit).

Hi Krista,
I was wondering how you're research was coming. I am a third year law
student at University of San Francisco. I am doing a long paper on mass
rape in war. In particular I am focusing on the status of the individual
claims that sex slaves of WWII are making in District Court in Tokyo. I am
also addressing the legal redress that Muslim women can and are seeking to
obtain due to the atrocities they experienced. First of all it is nice to
speak to someone who is also working on such a difficult issue. I myself
become emotionally exhausted and find it difficult to believe that serbian
soldiers enjoyed all of this. Could you please point me to some
information regarding your "brain wash" theory. I find that to be an
interesting perspective, however, unfortunately I have not been exposed to
it. Also, I do not believe that Catherine Mackinnon believes that
pornography is solely responsible for the rapes in Bosnia. I think that
her point is that pornography played a central role in motivating the
soldiers to rape. It's kinda like the chicken and the egg question. In a
case like this, where it is difficult to determine, what came first, the
chicken or the egg, I myself have know problems assigning blame to violent
pornography if in the future it could protect women from rape. Thanks for
listening :-) and good luck.
