I am fed up of the double standardness shown by the so-called "super
powers of the world.
Can anyone tell me why the whole international community comes running
for the aid of the
Kuwaitis when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait? That's an easy one,
ofcourse; they got
something out of helping the "stricken Arab community": OIL. Why else
would they help?
They didn't help the Muslims in Bosnia for almost 4 and a half years!!
And they have the
nerve to call themselves "super powers??" Where were all the soldiers of
the international
community when the UN "safe bases" were attacked? If they really were the
saviors of the
world, as they love to claim, then they would do everything in their
powers to help the poor
Bosnian Muslims from the Serbs. They could have finished this ethnic
conflict off so easily
if they had wanted to, the same way they killed off Saddam's army.
I wish they'd stop with their double talk, and just save the lives of so
many innocent people.

Dear women,
The Dayton Peace Agreement has for the world signalled the end of the war conflict in the
Balkans. But what kind of peace has actually been achieved and by whom?
As women and peace activists, we have had the strength to oppose the forces and the conditions
of war that have existed over the last four years. Unable to prevent the war, our strengths were
concentrated on empowering women to survive through women's solidarity. We have been
working with a variety of women's and peace groups from the countries of the former
Yugoslavia and abroad with this objective in mind.
We must now at this stage analyze and articulate the role of women in surviving and solving the
crisis of war in this region. We are anxious for the opportunity to express our views and
exchange our experiences with other women, to evaluate the activities of women during the
war, to discuss our lack of power in the context of war, to reconceptualize the male politics
and to create our own, women's politics of peace.
The International Forum for Women and the Politics of Peace will also be sucha space to clarify
the structural issues leading to and the possibilities of, inovercoming the divisions of our
communities. We intend to gather 50 women from all over the Balkans and neighboring
countries, from those areas which are marked by long-lasting wars as well as our friends and
supporters. The Forum will take place in Zagreb, Croatia from October 25th to 28th 1996.
The Forum will be a combination of workshops and plenary sessions.
A schedule is enclosed. Suggestions and feedback regarding the schedule will welcomed; by
May 31st at the latest.
