WOMEN IN BLACK, BELGRADE

Dear Friends,
We need your support for Women in Black's Fifth International Meeting of Women's Solidarity
Network Against War, August 1-4 in Novi Sad, Vojvodina
(now in Serbian state of former-Yugoslavia).
Zene u Crnom (Women in Black) was formed in October 1991 in Belgrade by a group of
women who felt the urgency to visibly protest the war and the false nationalistic divisions it
was imposing. That October in the midst of Belgrade, we began our weekly silent vigil
protesting the war, protesting the violence against women, and protesting the painful and
destructive impact of nationalism.
"We don't want to divide our two aims - fight for peace and fight for women's rights, because
these two aims cannot be divided. Behind our silence during our vigils there are waves of
words, strong and transformed into visible action. We are not only on the streets, but in refugee
camps, supporting refugees not to feel as anonymous numbers in humanitarian aid, but to feel
like useful and respected human beings, as they are. We are also in our books that we publish
constantly, and with these books we live in thousands of hands, minds and hearts. We are in
our international feminist conferences, every summer, behind the back of our government -
sharing women's voices. Cherishing the other, meeting women from all parts of the
former-Yugoslavia, of all nationalities."
- Sasa Kovacevic, Women in Black activist.
Our International Meeting of the "Network of Women's Solidarity Against War" is a
culmination of Zene u Crnom's various efforts: to strengthen and establish communication
among women from all the successor states of Yugoslavia, to support the iniatives of women
for peace, the exchange of experiences and the broadening of the solidarity network of
non-violent activists.
In 1995, 150 women participated from Bosnia, Macedonia, Croatia, Kosova, different Serbian
cities and villages, and from abroad there were women from Spain, Italy, Belgium, Hungary,
Switzerland, Great Britain, Germany, Denmark, Hungary, Israel and the US. Besides foreign
participants returning home and sharing first-hand what they had learned, the meeting was
covered in newspapers in Switzerland, Italy, US, Great Britain, Germany, Denmark, Spain as
well as by the BBC and Radio 1 in Belgium.
This year, we are expecting women from Russia, Chechnya, Greece, Albania, Turkey to join us,
as well as hopefully Algerian and Palestinian women, and others!
The meeting is also documented in the anthology "Women for Peace" which Women in Black
publishes each year. "Women for Peace" contains actions, statements, testimonies and the
feelings of Women in Black Against War, as well as those of the International Women's
Solidarity Network Against War, which we founded in 1992. The anthology is published in
four languages:
Serbo-Croatian, Italian, Spanish and English.
One of the ways we show our commitment to resisting the false nationalistic borders imposed
by the war, is to facilitate the participation of women from all the successor states of
former-Yugoslavia.
The project covers all their expenses for travel and accomodations for the meeting. We are
asking for your support for this project by sponsoring the participation of two women with a
tax-deductible donation of 250(US$).
Checks should be made out and sent by July 31 to:
Crabgrass - Working for Social Change
3181 Mission Street #30
San Fransisco, CA 94110
All our projects reflect Women in Black's commitment to supporting, preserving and
strengthening multi-ethnic coalitions among women which is often in direct opposition to the
cruel, divisive aims forced by the militaristic regimes. The Dayton Peace Accords will
hopefully ease the ongoing destruction of war on civilian lives, but it will take many years of
conscious efforts to strengthen and support multi-ethnicity and women's solidarity. Your
contribution to our efforts will make a difference!
in peace and sisterhood,
Women in Black
Belgrade
