There was no "moslem" nor "Serb" government in Bosnia prior to the massacres
which began in 1992. When Bosnia was recognized as an independent country
by major world powers in 1992, that Bosnian government was neither Serb nor
Moslem. When the massacres began in 1992, the Moslems were surprised, dismayed
and appaled, since they did nothing to invoke such extreme reaction. At that
time the B o s n i a n government was well represented by the Moslems, Serbs
and Croats. At that time Bosnia had absolutely no army. And at any time very
few Moslems joined the army so that the existing Jugoslav army, which was
fourth largest army in Europe at the time, had a free hand in Bosnia. Most
of the Serb officers were ardent nationalists, and the rest of the gory
story is well known to the World.
Since the massacres, a polarization has definitely occured, much has to be
done to restore that original cosmopolitan nature of this cultural centre
of South Europe. There was a hardening of nationalist thought on all sides.
Now, Bosnian government is not so cosmopolitan. Bosnian army is predominantly
Moslem and ther is an underlying suspicion of anybody who is not a Moslem.
We hope that the old intermingling and exchange of ideas between different
nationalities will occur in a year or two, after the war criminals have been
punished, and old cultural flavour returns to beautiful Bosnia and Sarajevo.
Serbs on the other hand maintain purity of their race and reject existence
with any other race. Perhaps, they will also have a change of heart, once
true peace is achieved. Peace, Salaam, Shalom, Paz, Mir to everyone!
