Hello,
I am a high school senior from Sarajevo, now living in Washington DC
area. I've found out that you were interested in the Sarajevo Jewish
Community.=
Sarajevo Jews belong to Sefardic Jews who came from Spain long time ago
during inquisition prosecutions. Jewish refugees established themselves
in Sarajevo and built the synagogue for themselves.
Sefardic Jews contributed a lot to Sarajevo cultural life. We were
enriched with the unique sefardic music. Also it was only Sarajevo and
Jerusalem among the cities in the entire world that had a church, a
mosque, cathedral and a synagogue all located in the half mile radius.
There are many more things about Sarajevo Jewish Community which I
would be glad to inform you about.

I am so glad that we finally have troops in Bosnia to help. They should
have been there years ago; maybe more people would be alive today if
President Clinton had been more willing to take the risk of sending troops.
I can't begin to explain to you how ashamed I was of my country because we
allowed so much killing when we could have stopped it. I've never been
ashamed of being an American before and it wasn't a good feeling.
You may think that people in this country don't care about you. Yes, we
do have a LOT of jerks here (just look at our Congress!), but our Rabbi
gave many sermons on the importance of helping Bosnia; he gave us
petitions, he spoke at public rallies. In a strange twist, the American
Jewish community was one of the strongest voices in this country imploring
the government to come to the immediate aid of a mostly Moslem nation. I
wrote so many letters to my representatives, the paper, radio stations,
etc. that they stopped replying.
Well finally, the world had enough carnage and is there trying to stop it.
Again, I'm s osorry that my efforts and the efforts of thousands others
like me weren't enough to get you help any sooner. Good Luck, we're all
praying for you!!!!

This will probably be my best (and only) chance to publicly apologize in
Bosnia for my country's conduct during this war. We were willing to pay
lip service to the concept of freedom, but unwilling to actually put
ourselves on the line to defend it. For the first itme in my life, I was
ashamed of my country and it wasn't a nice feeling.
You may think that Americans don't care about what's going on, and yes,
some Americans are jerks (just look at our Congress!), but many, many
others spoke up on a regular basis. Our Rabbi gave sermon after sermon
denouncing what was happening and comparing it (quite correctly) to the
Holacaust. He told us all that if we didn't stand up and publicly call for
intervention to stop genocide then we had no business critizicing the
world's silence during WWII. People who can stop killing and don't are as
guilty as the killers themselves. In a strange twist, please know that the
American Jewish Community was one of the loudest voices calling for
intervention and help for Bosnia. When innocent children are being gunned
down and thousands forced from their homes or put into concentration camps,
their religion doesn't matter. What really matters is the religion of the
people watching. Are the willing to stand on principle and put themselves
on the line or do they turn away. For too long, the world turned away, and
I'm so, so sorry. I supported action years ago and I can't believe it took
this long.
