BALKAN INITIATIVES, INC.
With the conviction that the cultures of the Balkan
peninsula are important but poorly understood in the Western
world, and recognizing the historical and contemporary roles
that women have played and are playing (from as early as
Queen Teuta of the Illyrians to women working in the Balkans
today in the economy, the arts, the professions, politics,
and the home), six Americans have established a non-profit
organization, based in New York, called Balkan Initiatives,
Inc. Its fundamental aims are to transform the perceptions of
outsiders, particularly in the United States, about all of
these cultures and to work with organizations throughout the
Balkans to encourage peaceful change.
The founders and initial directors are Kathleen Imholz,
a lawyer in New York City; Julie Mostov, a political theorist
at Drexel University in Philadelphia; Marjorie Senechal, a
mathematician and historian of science at Smith College,
Northampton, Massachusetts; Luan Troxel, a political
scientist currently in Germany; Walter Bacon, a political
scientist at the University of Nebraska in Omaha; and Ageliki
Nicopolou, an educational psychologist at Smith College. We
take the "Balkans" to mean Albania, Bosnia-Hercegovina,
Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Slovenia,
Turkey, and Yugoslavia.
In the United States, our aims include publishing and
disseminating a newsletter, writing, speaking and organizing
conferences, and supporting Balkan research and culture.
In the Balkans, we seek to work with or establish local
affiliates, with a particular interest in developing economic
activity by women; encouraging women entrepreneurs, artists,
and professionals; and supporting the development of interest
in and resources for women's participation in political life.
One of our first projects is to support the creation of a
magazine for women in Albania, in conjunction with a new
Albanian foundation called Gra per Transformimin e Ballkanit
(Women Transforming the Balkans).
