What is your opinion about the War Crimes Tribunal? Do you believe that
the guilty must
be brought to justice before any peace is possible or is it a symbolic
empty gesture of
a world community who couldn't prevent the atrocities so it will now try
to punish them?
Do you think it will be funded properly and if not what will be the
consequences? Do you
believe that the prosecution will be fair and ubiased? In particular, I
am wondering if
the war crime of rape will be connected only to the Serb side or will it
also be attributed
to any other perpetrator (UN soldiers, Moslems or Croats)?

International Training for Nonviolence
Nonviolence in the Context of War or Armed Conflict
13-28 April 1996
Peace and human rights activists, people working with refugees or war affected
population all over the world bear witness that it is possible to work on armed
conflicts and against large-scale human rights violations with nonviolent means.
They also experience that only long-term commitment can heal wounds, bring
about reconciliation or even settle the dispute. Good will and commitment are
indispensable for this work, but not sufficient. Training in nonviolent skills
related to work in situations of war or civil war, awareness of own strengths
and weakness, learning how to analyse situations - these are experiences that
can make the activist`s work more effective.
International Training
KURVE Wustrow, in cooperation with the International Fellowship of
Reconcilation (IFOR), is holding an international nonviolence training in
English language, specifically designed for those working or planning to
work in such situations. It is particularly intended for:
7 activists from local peace, human rights and reconciliation groups
7 volunteers or persons interested in engaging in nonviolent third-party
intervention
7 persons shaping pedagogical approaches for educating populations in
crisis areas
7 persons working with refugees.
The training will address the following topics:
7 Principles of nonviolence and nonviolent direct action
7 dealing with threatening situations
7 dialogue and nonviolent communication skills
7 reconciliation
7 consensus decision making and team work
7 dealing with stress, fear and traumatic experience
7 receiving and giving criticism, empowerment
7 understanding and transforming conflicts
7 observing and reporting human rights violations
7 issues of cultural sensitivity
7 political analysis and nonviolent strategy development
Training Site
KURVE Wustrow (Bildungs- und Begegnungsstdtte f|r gewaltfreie Aktion) is a
nonviolence training center not far from Hamburg and Hannover in the north
of Germany. Its staff has much experience in training volunteers for peace
work in Ex-Yugoslavia or in projects of Peace Brigades International. The
center is situated in the area of Gorleben which has got a long tradition
of resistance against a nuclear waste storage. The house offers simple
accomodation in two-bed to six-bed rooms. The food generally is vegetarian
and is prepared together.
Trainers
The trainers will be Jill Sternberg and Hagen Berndt. Jill Sternberg was
the coordinator of IFOR`s Nonviolence Education and Training Project from
1992-1995. She has experience in mediation and nonviolence training in
North America, Europe and Africa. Hagen Berndt has faciliated nonviolence
trainings in Europe and South Asia. They are specialising in training
volunteers for crisis intervention
We hope to have a training team of three persons, including a trainer from Asia.
