Yes, it looks like peace is coming to Bosnia. Six feet below the ground,
that is. People who look to further their own self-interest on the basis
of chauvinism should think very carefully about the "peace" they want.
This is because they will get it, whether in Bosnia, Flanders' Fields, or
my own country, the US.
For many years, policy makers have been keen to kill people, bomb people,
rape people, and burn people, as long as it was done by remote control,
as long as they didn't have to see it. The atrocites of Milosevic were
simply the most obvious examples we see. Some day, the people who make
decisions over other peoples' lives should actually see what evil they
are perpetrating. The people who tell others to murder but cannot take
the responsibility for smelling the burning flesh or seeing the
decapitated head are acting without responsibility.
Power is not simply a game. It is a matter of life and death. It is
responsibility. The blind lust for power without responsibility easily
translates into a lust for blood. I pray that there is not only peace
someday in Bosnia, but happiness. Not only victory over the hot fires of
chauvinism, but the wisdom to see the consequences of actions and the
goodness to care about having an environment one can raise children in.
Some day, I hope that world leaders can think of the consequences of their
actions and inaction on the little children, and choose to do what is
best for them.
