Dear C. Groth,
I'm an English teacher at a university in Germany. I've just read the
message you sent to Zamir Chatline, and I want to let you know that I
wholeheartedly agree with what you wrote.
It was a fine message, and I'm sure you'll receive some flames for it,
because others have warned me that happens to everyone who sends a
communication to Zamir that appears to favor the Bosnians.
For the last three years or so, I too have felt horrified that "UN
troops watch idly while innocents are deliberately targeted and shelled"
in Bosnia.
Early in the summer I decided that I at least could no longer stand idly
by. I would do the only thing I could do: I made the decision to start
sending E-Mail letters as often as possible to the President, every day
if I were able to, in support of the Bosnians and in support of a just
conclusion to the war.
I've also encouraged others to start doing the same. Or if they're not
in a position to do that, I've encouraged them simply to send to the
President additional copies of my letters - or even parts of my letters
- with a notation something like, "This letter also supports my view
that the United States should allow the Bosnians to defend themselves
and to establish a just government in their own country, free from Serb
aggression and outside interference."
If you would like me to add your name to the distribution list for these
letters, I would be happy to do so.
Sincerely yours,
Robert Bennett

Dear President Clinton:
Aleksandr, my Serb acquaintance was elated, as he strolled into my place
yesterday evening.
"You see?" he said, waving his cigar and filling the room with smoke.
"What did I tell you? We can get anything we want. All we need is a little
patience."
I asked him what had happened.
"What's HAPPENED?" he laughed, dropping ashes onto my carpet. "Where have
you BEEN? Look, remember at the beginning of last month how I complained
that those UN safe areas - Srebrenica, Zepa, and Gorazde - were sticking
in our throats."
He waved the smoke away. "So we took Srebrenica and got rid of every
Moslem man and boy we could lay our hands on. The world went berserk -
especially the French - but of course none of them actually DID anything.
So then we took Zepa - and this time the world held a lot of meetings, and
THEN what did they do? Oh dear, they SWORE they'd never let us have Gorazde."
"And today?" he said, settling himself into my most comfortable chair and
lighting another cigar, "today the Ukrainian peacekeepers pull out of
Gorazde, and CNN reports Karadjic's announcement, 'we WANT THAT TOWN.'"
I said quietly that the UN threatened air strikes last month if the Serbs
attacked Gorazde.
"And you BELIEVE them?" he smirked, helping himself to some of my brandy.
"Well, WE didn't. We knew if we just stayed away from Gorazde for a few
weeks, we'd have it on a platter."
He went into the kitchen and started rooting through my refrigerator.
"We knew we'd have it on a platter, just like we're going to have the rest
of Bosnia - and sooner than you think," he yelled, as something crashed to
the floor. "And that'll be just the beginning."
I couldn't think of anything more to say.
But I thought to myself, yes, that'll be just the beginning.
Sincerely yours,
Robert J. Bennett
