Hi Ivo,
I don't understand what you mean, or what I should do, when you say my
messages bounced to you.
All the best,

Hi Ivo,
Many thanks for your note. In my case, I guess it was "imperfect earthling
technnology," which actually I think is pretty amazing, but that's another
story. Anyway, I haven't sent - and won't send - anything over 40K!
All the best,
Bob Bennett

Subject: Hard Times in Belgrade?

Dear President Clinton:
A call came in from my Serb acquaintance who yesterday bragged that
sanctions were having no effect on Belgrade.
"Did you SEE Bill Delaney's report on CNN?" She was almost shouting.
"What a load of propaganda!"
I asked her what she was talking about.
"CNN has just broadcast a piece about Belgrade that must have been
written in Sarajevo," she said. "It's about all the difficulties Serbs
are having: how people are struggling to get by on less than their
pre-war income, how everybody's hurting because they can't take
vacations this year, and how they just can't WAIT until the war ends."
I said that sounded better than the report I'd just heard from Sarajevo.
Seven people had been killed in the latest Serb shelling. I told her
that at least the Bosnians weren't shelling Belgrade.
"That's not the POINT!" She said, still almost shouting. "It doesn't
MATTER how bad things are in Sarajevo. Nobody cares about that. What
matters is that CNN has given a completely FALSE idea of life in
Belgrade. We're all behind Milosevic one hundred percent, and NOBODY's
suffering."
Well, I said, what if they are?
"What if they ARE?" she bellowed. "Can't you see that means that the
American negotiators could put more pressure on us?"
Then there was silence. I almost thought we'd been cut off, but in a few
seconds I heard her voice again, suddenly much calmer. "Wait a minute,"
she said. "Wait a minute. So what if they push Milosevic into
recognizing Bosnia? So what if we recognize them for a year, two years,
even five years. Diplomatic recognition has never stopped one country
from continuing to try to conquer another."
There was another silence.
"And it won't stop us."
Sincerely yours,
Robert J. Bennett
