We are organizing a Sarajevo (as well as other cities in the ex-Yugoslavia)
internet connection for the Helsinki Night of the Arts in 31st August. The
idea behind it is that there would be pcs with internet connection for the
audience to communicate to Bosnia. As we are aware that on-line internet
connections to Sarajevo do not exist at the moment (or do they???) we were
thinking that the communications could be organized on a modem to modem
-basis, at least partly.
In this we would need the help and support of your organization as we
would need names and telephone numbers of people in Sarajevo (and elsewhere
in Bosnia) who have modems and telephone lines and who would be willing to
participate in our communication effort. The idea is that Bosnian refugees
in Finland could perhaps find their relatives in Bosnia and communicate
with them through our system.
I will gladly tell you more of this if you need more information. Enclosed
is also a press release of the event.
Hoping to hear from your organization soon
Yours sincerely
Jari Kupiainen

Press Release
The City of Helsinki annual Night of the Arts will be celebrated again
this year, along the tradition, on August 31. The Night consists of
multiple ways to present different arts, in various venues, from art
galleries and theatres to book stores, streets and squares, spread out all
over the downtown Helsinki. As previous years suggest, tens of thousands,
we dare to speak well over a hundred thousand people, will again enjoy the
rich palette of happenings that night.
One of the major happenings of the Night, the Balkan Night, will unfold at
the prestigious Senate Square from 18.00 until ca. 22.00.
The aim and the content of the event is manifold. First and foremost, to
remind people of the horrendous war taking place in the ex-Yugoslavia. It
is intended to bring back to minds the gravity of the crisis, but at the
same time to keep up the hope for peace.
The idea behind the event is simply to help; it is non-political, no
preferations are taken regarding the religion, ethnic origin etc.
During the Night at the Senate Square various NGOs and other organizations
present their activities and projects in the ex-Yugoslavia. Organizations
taking part are to this date 26.7. (and more may be involved): Red Cross
of Finland, Unicef, PAND, Children in War, Children First, Save the
Children, Ship to Bosnia, Finchurchaid, Finnish Society of the Mental
Health, Bureau for the Help for Refugees, Womens International League for
Peace and Freedom, Finnkino, Helsinki Festival, Savoy Theatre, and many
private persons.
The catch and the red line running through the event is an internet
connection to different cities in the ex-Yugoslavia. Beforehand will be
gathered messages in the net of people ravaged by the war trying to find
their lost relatives. This information will be at hand at the square to be
processed ahead, as well as other messages. The square will be equipped
with some pc-terminals for writing messages.
It is also the aim to create a real time on-line connection between
Helsinki and cities and towns in the ex-Yugoslavia, such as Sarajevo,
Zagreb, Belgrad - we only hope that the connections are to be realized.
In order to materialize the net connection organizations participating in
the Night try to inform their connections and friends in the Balkans well
beforehand to enable successful connections.
The Balkan Happening will also consist of performances by established
artists of various fields in Finland.
More enriching, a near-by performance hall will present art by orphan
children living in Sarajevo, and an exhibition of modern Serbian
photography.
