  • Back around 1980, my roomate,"Pete", was washing his car on the driveway. This was an upscale part of town, and we were both law abiding citizens in our early twenties. Along came Deputy Sheppard and his thugs, who drove past and slammed on the brakes. The good deputy had a rogue reputation in Santa Clara County. They got out of their service vehicles and ordered Pete to the ground. Sheppard pulled out his shotgun, put it to Pete's head and advised if he made one move, his head would be blown off. When politely asking what this was all about, Sheppard replied, "Shut the fuck up!" Several minutes later, a call came over the radio after a warrant check and they released him. Again being polite, he asked why they did this. Sheppard, who was about 6'3", 250lbs walked up to Pete and said that if he said anything, they know where he lives. We never knew what happened to Deputy Sheppard, but I wouldn't be surprised if a citizen during one of his home invasions executed his constitutional rights and put Mr. Sheppard permanently out of service. Police abuse is not a liberal or conservative issue. It's a constitutional issue. From Randy Weaver to local police authorities, the government and local police departments have been given too many authoritative rights. There are now so many laws on the books, virtual anyone can be guilty of a crime. Most police officer's I've met are very professional, but once in a while, a Deputy Sheppard will create a situation where as the people have lost all trust in law enforcement.
