COURTROOM BEATING BY POLICE LEADS TO DEATH IN INDIANAPOLIS

A cab driver is arrested for having a joint then beaten to death in a courtroom in broad daylight. Add to that the fact that this information did not come to public attention until the second autopsy? I agree with the previous feedback, this story is pretty vague.

looking for beatings with the new asp baton police use. it is made of steel not wood like the traditional club. i believe that a metal club is a dangerous weapon. only 8 hours training is required before officer can carry this steel club. i consider that to be insufficient.

even if this person acted out of line these so called police officers are supposed to be trained professionals and subdue people without harm we should all think about who is really protecting us.

I'm all choked up....

I know from first hand experience about being beaten while cuffed. I was beaten by a cop while at least 10 other cops watched while handcuffed behind my back. As the officer was cuffing me he told the other cops "make sure there aren't any cameras around." I was not resisting the arrest at all at the time or at any time prior (or even after). One of the cops told me to "shut up, and it will all be over in a minute" when I started complaining about the abuse. I took his advice and am here to talk about. Some of the people that posted comments here might think this is a big joke. You will think different when it happens to you or a loved one. I have learned a lesson, don't ever trust cops, you just never know what they may do to you.

This message is in response to the 4 year officer who replied to the above messages regarding trusting the police. My experience has been as such. This incident happened to me about two to three years ago. I was up late cleaning my apartment and getting things together for a business trip that I was to take the next morning. I ended up being up all night because of the amount of things that I had to do. I finally started to catch a few winks of sleep when I was awakened by a scream outside my bedroom windows. To say that it startled me would be an understatement. I arose from my bed to look out of my bedroom window to see a woman standing and screaming. I also say a neighbor of mine that I did not know standing on the porch to his apartment. I saw him throw a towel down to her. My assumption was that they were having an argument, so I proceeded to try and catch a few more minutes sleep. It turned out that it was too late for that. I was just a few hours from needing to get up and leave, so I stayed up. I, that early early morning, had my apartment searched by police officers who where "Doing their duty". I was taken from my apartment and paraded in front of bright headlights while the lady who I saw screaming attempted to identify the man who had just snatched her purse and disappeared into the night. I had to make a trip to the sheriffs office to set up a lie detector test to try and prove my innocence after they where told by a "Witness" that I was the one who had snatched this womans purse. This witness turned out to be a not-to-mentally-stable woman living below me who wanted a way to get out of her lease because she could not afford the rent any longer. The police eventually closed this case once they found out that the thief had tried to use this womans credit card at so store while they where fucking around with my life that early morning. I only found out that the case was closed after repeated calls to find out what the status of the case was. So not only did the police dick me over, but they did not have the decency to contact me to let me know that they had realized that they had made a mistake. They instead let me stew as I drank myself into a fucking stupor day after day after day as I thought about just how fucked up our system is when an innocent man can have his life turned upside down and even go to jail just because of something that someone said. A lie is a lie no matter how you look at it. And I was the victim of this lie. This is the reason that I have no respect for the police. Yeah, simple human decency prevents me from going postal on the police, but that's what stops most all people. There is no respect left. I am a black man who's life was fucked with just because I am black. The assailant in this case was described as a black male with short hair. Well, I guess that just about makes me and a high percentage of the black population highly suspect. But I think not. If the police wish to be shown respect. They had better work damn hard to regain what they have lost. Unfortunately, they can never get mine back. Nor can they take away the hell that they put me through for that period of three to four weeks. I feel like saying that all cops can go to hell. But that would make me just as narrow minded and short visioned as some of them can be.

Okay guys, here's the deal. I live in this city and I know a few of the police officers that work within it. This is an old case. I am sorry for the man that died. The officers that did this were wrong, however, IPD has a history of officers that tend to choose "the dark side". Look at the officers involved in the downtown brawl a few years back. The officer that is in jail for murder (albeit a drug dealer that he killed). Cops shacking up with hookers and beating up strippers. Why should we in Indianapolis be surprised by this? Still the question remains on whether or not do we trust the men and women who are supposed to serve and protect us. My answer is yes I do. They are fallable. They are human. They are also the best thing that we have to protect us from our city being taken over by anarchists. This is not Utopia. Our perfect world does not operate on the streets of Indianapolis, Indiana, or for that matter, anywhere on this Earth; however, this is the best system that we have in place so far, and I will support it until we get leagally something better.

I agree the information here is way too vague to be taken seriously. I have been a visitor in many of the Court Rooms, which are kept very orderly. Also I have rode with patrolmen during their duty. IPD has a Ride Policy, and it is an education all citizens should have. Of course if you are a convicted Felon, you need not apply...You may call any of the Roll call Departments and request to ride a shift with an Officer.....I believe you will be amazed at the Professionalism of IPD Officers. While it is possible for 1 or 2 bad eggs to slip in to the Department, it is rare in Indianapolis. Indianapolis Police Dept. is one of the Best Law Enforcement Agencies in the United States.....While riding with an officer, I observed him being called terrible names, even spit on by a drunk man who was harrassing a woman trying to get into her car he was leaning against...After the second time I rode, I decided what Americans all need is about a month of NO Law Enforcement Agencies for any calls. Send them all, everyone across the country to the Bahamas for a month......Let us all then see how we survive...... D weber

I am a law enforcement officer as well. It is time that all members of society be held accountable for their actions. Regardless of their job law enforcement officer or "fry guy" at the local burger joint. Black, white, Red , green or purple. The State and Federal government has laws. Like them or not we must obey them, and law enforcement is sworn to enforce them. I am not condoning excessive use of force. However, if the guy had'nt broke the law he would'nt have been in court.

Speaking from experience they are all control freeks! All of his friends on the force displayed a constant need for controle. I believe there are good cops and bad cops, just like any other profession. However, if this report of an innocent civilian being killed by an officer's own hand is true, and they have proof of it, should not our federal government then step in and provide justice for the deceased man's family? Justice can still prevail here, as long as there is someone to provide their time and energy into researching all of the information needed and then provide the media in its many forms with the true information of what happened - expose it, let the people of this great country of ours hear the truth! I wish I could get someone to investigate why my brother was incrcerated in Indianapolis for three months something he did not do. While he was there he did not receive his Heart Medication the way his doctor prescribed or proper medical treatment while he was there and the day they released him is the day he died. Go figure! I am a former cop in Indiana and I am also 6'5 and weigh 250 lbs. Whe I first started my career I thought that I was doing something good for my community. The reason why I mention my hieght and weight is because my department hired me for one reason and one reason only, and that was to be an enforcer. Never mind that I was a college graduate with something to offer, I was there to keep the lower class and the stoners in line. I am not condoning anything I ever did and the people I hurt both mentally and physically I am truly sorry for all of those I hurt. But all cops are brainwashed into thinking they are above the law. The cops accused him theft but his first appearance in court the Judge says," No way can this man be found guilty of theft." The dirty cop accused him of stealing a marijuana cigarett butt that he didn't have in the first place. They kept Joe's body for six days, wouldn,t let his parents see him while they cooked up their story. God's Justice will prevail; No one escapes Gods laws and no one can break them . They are immutiable.

There was a man shot and killed in Gainesville Tx about 2 weeks ago after being told to drop a brick. When the man dropped the brick, officer Brown shot him in the chest killing him on the spot. Of course they are investigating this, but I'm sure the officer will not have a problem keeping his job. Police officers in Tx are more like Mafia than protectors. If you have enough money you are safe, if you don't God help you because the lawyers and police are in the judges pockets.

If he didn't resist arrest he wouldn't have be restrained. Of course the other people in the court said he didn't resist because there also criminals and that why there in the court room.

I have an audio tape of my son being beaten by the Indiana cops and he was not resisting arrest. Hours later they took him to Wishard where they found he had 7 broken bones in his FACE as well as other injuries and instead of treating him they took him to jail and let him lay there without so much as an asprin for 23 DAYS! We live out of state and we called and faxed and finally FED-X'd a letter to the mayor to get him some medical care. The lawyer referral service says no local attorney will take the case because they consider a suit against the IPD as "conflict of interest". In the trial the cops lied on the stand and I can prove it but you know who is the one person who can bring charges of perjury? The State's Attorney and that is who they were lying for. I asked an attorney if a person lies in behalf of the State is he immune from perjury and he said it shouldn't be but in reality, yes. Anyone who does not believe this goes on has their head in the sand. It took me a lifetime but now I see.
