A man alleges Winnipeg Police Service officers beat him senseless, then charged him with assault to cover their tracks! The old addage that the best defence is offence rings very true here as "Deep Blue" does it again! - 27 Year old James Alexander was acquitted of two counts of assualting police officers and now plans to pursue court action against the two officers involved. - The lawyer for Alexander said that far from assaulting police, his client was beated unconscious by officers early on the morning of October 24, 1998 outside a Burger King resturant in Notre Dame Avenue. - Alexander, who was aquitted of this alleged assault on police officers after a 2 day trial before Justice Richard Chartier, said that he had not been hopefull of the outcome of the criminal case being made against him. - That he did not expect a fair shake but in this case he did get a fair shake before the Justice. - What Alexander went through, he would not want to happen to anyone. - Lawyer for Alexander typifies the police tactics as, the police lay these assualt charges to protect themselves, it diverts the situation, the best defence is a good offence, so what they do is lay charges of assualt. It was said that there was a lot of things that happened that demonstrate what police get away with and how citizens are often victimized, that it is very upsetting! - Winnipeg Police Chief, (getting to be known as; Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil and never respond to a letter - Jack!) said there is no internal investigation into the incident because on one has lodged a complaint. (the tape of the police beating damage to the victim was aired on network TV to show the viewing public how badly he was beaten) However he, Chief Ewatski did concede that a probe will be launched anyway. Anytime the police get a verdict like that with an acquittal, we have a look at our investigations and see if there are problems with it...or is it just a perception of the court....This has the potential of being given a second look.... The chief dismissed the lawyers claims as opinion, not fact!.....For us (the police) to lay a charge there has to be reasonable grounds..... Obviously they (the police) felt there was reasonable grounds to lay the charge and the charge was indeed laid.... The Police officers claimed Alexander assaulted them both when they tried to break up a fight between Alexander and his brother.... Lawyer for Alexander said police beat Alexander in the parking lot and later in the police cruiser car and again at the Public Safety Building 151 Princess Street.... Alexander had bruises over almost every inch of his chest, his shoulders, his arms, legs, face, forehead, his eye, his lip was split open......One of Alexander's legs was swollen to 1 1/2 times its normal size of the other....It was bruised all the way aroundthe leg, he couldn't move it.... Alexander's case cannot be taken to the Province of Manitoba's Law Enforcement Review Agency because of a one year from date of occurance deadline for all complaints under the legislation, most have come to know as a toothless piece of legislation in need of a total overhaul with more resources...... MOVE OVER RODNEY KING! NOT ONLY DOES THE WINNIPEG POLICE SERVICE SHOW THE REST OF NORTH AMERICA UP IN THE ART OF NOT ONE BUT NORMALLY AT LEAST 2 CRUISER CARS STATIONED AT DONNUT SHOPS AT OPERTUNE TIMES BUT ALSO THAT BARBARIC PUBLIC CHILD BEATINGS IN FRONT OF POLICE OFFICERS IS JUST FINE..... BEFORE RODNEY KIND EVER CAME ALONG.....AND IF YOU ARE GOING TO BEAT SOMEONE SENSELESS, DO IT IN THE POLICE CRUISER OR AT THE PUBLIC SAFETY BUILDING 151 PRINCESS STREET, AWAY FROM PRYING EYES OR POSSIBLE EXPOSURE TO VIDEO TAPING!....... The close of millenium for the City of Winnipeg is not a glorious one! Winnipeg became Canada's murder capital, arson capital, Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba and Winnipeg Police Service sanctioned Gustapo tactics capital, Police beatings capital (we can't forget about the Winnipeg Police Service officer Eakin (200 lb cop) beating up a visiting south african of 150 lb in handcuffs yet!.... Eakin shortly going on trial for assault!.. and lastly of the off duty Winnipeg Police Services officer who took his wife's motorcycle to the bar for a drink with friends...met a lovely girl and single mother.....Ms. Wood.....after the consumption of alcohol gave Ms. Wood a ride to..........?????...for what later......????? lost control of the motorcycle killing Ms. Wood, leaving her young daughter an orphan....The botched police investigation........really!.... allowed the officer to get a fine and a unconditional discharge from a court where it was plain to see that the jury of the citizens of Winnipeg was afraid to come down hard on the officer (a Winnipeg characteristic of it's gutless populace). IT IS BEGINNING TIME THAT THE NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF MANITOBA FRESHLY ELECTED TO POWER FOR THE CITIZENS OF THE PROVINCE OF MANITOBA HAVE A VERY HARD LOOK AT THE INJUSTICES AND OF THE AGENCIES IT INHERITED FROM THE MORALLY BANKRUPT FIMON-Conservatives. It is time to have a purely civilian agency to oversee the action of the police forces under its jurisdiction with legislative teeth and determination.... Similarly with agencies run amok like in the neoNazi like Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba, heads should role, never mind being jailed for the criminal acts going on there the Winnipeg Police Service is still steadfastly reluctant to prosecute. Canadians of some ilk like to point at the USA saying that Canada is the best country to live in and even better that anywhere in the oh so violent and gun toting USA!......Don't believe it, even for a minute.....We have our share of nut cases and in high places and political toilets no different than our cousins to the south do and some even worse yet! - END
