  • TO INTERNET USERS: Please register your support for the global boycott announced below, if you agree, to Senator.Thompson@sen.ca.gov,sananda@northcoast.com [Then, forward the below news release to your local, regional and statewide media, and to your friends and associates on the World Wide Web. Thanks much in advance...] November 30, 1996 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: (Contact: Ruben Botello @ Pager No. 707-269-8275 or sananda@northcoast.com) HEADWATERS HOMELESS PROTEST GROWING ON THE INTERNET EUREKA (CA)---The global tourist boycott of Eureka (CA) is gaining ground, as environmental and homeless activists join forces across the World Wide Web. Since the American Homeless Society announced the economic boycott on the Internet in September, to protest mistreatment of the homeless in the old-growth Headwaters Forest, and on the South Spit peninsula of Humboldt Bay, thousands of Internet users have pledged their support around the world.* "Our three primary concerns are the 60 thousand-acre Headwaters Forest, the South Spit homeless community, and the police abuse unleashed by local officials against homeless and other protesters exercising their constitutional rights in opposition to destruction of the ancient forest and community," declared Ruben Botello, founder of the Society. "Our global call to boycott Eureka is accelerating and expanding, rapidly, as sophisticated Internet users forward our plea to virtually every nation and city on earth." "Eureka has an ex-cop (Congressman Frank Riggs), a carpetbagger (State Sen. Mike Thompson), a shoplifter (county supervisor Stan Dixon busted for shoplifting this year) and a drunk (county welfare John Frank busted on a DUI charge this year) trying to drive thousands of homeless and other protesters out of Humboldt County on behalf of the local logging and tourist industries," stated Botello. "These corrupt officials even went so low as to declare the homeless an "environmental hazard" in Thompson's Senate Bill 39, while ignoring the horrendous pollution of the local air, land, sea, rivers and streams by these two major industries." "Thousands of homeless live in and around the Humboldt County seat (Eureka)," Botello said. "They are being increasingly rousted, arrested, harassed and abused by local law enforcement agencies and vigilantes who hope the homeless and other protesters will leave the county in fear of returning." "The global boycott will end when Eureka starts acting socially responsible toward its homeless and environment," explained the advocate. "By next summer, we should have hundreds of thousands, if not millions of Internet users and other concerned citizens of the world supporting the boycott." -30- *E-MAIL SAMPLES DISPATCHED TO SEN. MIKE THOMPSON IN SUPPORT OF BOYCOTT: X-POP3-Rcpt: sananda@redwood.northcoast.com From: aaronr@alice.uoregon.edu (Aaron Rappaport) Subject: no subject (file transmission) To: sananda@northcoast.com Date: Fri, 29 Nov 1996 15:43:07 -0800 (PST) Dear Senator Thompson, Speaking as chair of the Many Rivers Group of the Sierra Club, with 2900 members in Lane, Douglas, and Coos counties in Oregon, I support the boycott against the tourism industry in Eureka. Displacing homeless environmental activists who are basically struggling to preserve the very aspects of Eureka that make it an attractive place for tourists to visit is morally wrong and counter-productive to the goal of enhancing tourism. I and our other 2900 members will be heeding this boycott and taking our tourism business elsewhere until the mis-directed police aggression described below is stopped. Question: How do you reconcile the U.S. Constitution's guarentee of private property rights with that of your protest? Is not the Headlands owned by a company? If so, this makes it private property under any law or court decision in the past 200+ years. Is there a program or fund started to buy the land outright instead of the feds with their land swap?

Sorry but I dont see the brutality. I see Elected Officals out of control using their power to make the Police do their dirty work. Law Enforcement is a Paramilaristic organization. They appeared to have been ordered what to do. I bet most of them dont enjoy it, but only do it per the order. If you changed your stance, and went after the Officials and backed the Officers when the refused to comply with the Officials orders, you'd get more cooperation....... But you won't because its politically correct to hate cops instead of supporting them and dont even start to give me the "I support good cops bull". You dont, you just like to complain. I've been a Cop for along time now and have been ordered to do things I didn't like. When I spoke up, I was threatened with my Job, my livelyhood. I went to the public for support and they turned ther backs, so don't cry until your willingl to really stand up. Right now your still on your Knees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Police brutality is a serious problem and needs to be dealt with. I'm sure most tax payers would not approve of our dollars paying these sick individuals to beat the shit out of us. These corrupt, sick, and most of all racist pigs need to be caught and seriously punished. They are committing a moral and constitutional crime. I don't believe all or even most law enforcement officers are corrupt or cruel, but the few that are make it hard to trust any. By any means necessary they should be absent from our society.

I think that sometimes police are just doing their jobs, I mean hey, nobody's perfect. But I also think that alot of police officers do take advantage of their powers and that alot of the time things do go to far. But this is TOTALLY not saying that this applies to all police officers everywhere. There are a great deal of people trying to "defend and protect" society. But honestly, if we were to believe that this never went on we would be totally ignorant. I think that the main problem is, we don't do anything about it until it is to late and people are DEAD!!

The police are given more and more power every day, supposedly for our own protection. Today we are guilty until proven innocent. The courts are driven by a thirst for money and power. American citizens are not aware of the danger that face's them. I fear that by the time the people awaken from thier blissful sleep of ignorance, that the police state will be too powerful to overcome, and that government of the people, by the people, and for the people, will have perished from the face of the earth.

I am a police officer in Boston, Ma. I was searching the web for infomration on police brutality for a paper I am doing for school. My paper will focus on police brutality around the globe, not just here in the United States. I have only been on the job for six years now and I have seen alot of action already. For example, on New Years day this year, my supervisor and coworker were shot when they responded to a call of domestic violence. Both almost died. A female classmate of mine was shot with a .45 while attempting to handcuff a violent suspect (she dropped her radio, bent to pick it up and got shot). Another classmate of mine confronted a robbery suspect, while at close range, the guy pulled a knife on the officer (21 foot rule), and chased him, the officer drew his weapon while running away and shot behind him into the guys stomach. Another classmate of mine was forced to shoot a guy when the suspect hit him with his car, forcing him onto the hood. The operator would not stop, instead he sped up. The operator endangered workers on the big dig who witnessed the incident, almost running their heads over in a ditch they were digging. The operator was fatally shot. Tow new guys responded to a call for domestic violence in progress (screaming was heard). Upon arrival, they found two youths with their throats slit, still bleeding. While searching the rest of the house, one opened a closet door, and the mother that slit her own kids throats exited the closet and rushed them with the same bloody knife. Pop quiz...what do you do?....at close range, with someone who has proven their intent and potential?..Don't forget you have a house, you are on probation as a new officer and you will be judged by the rest of the country as a killer if you hurt her. These are seriously only a few of the incidents that have occured. If you were to compare the statistics of the United States against those of other countries, you would once again, be proud to be an American. Did you know that in 'Shanghai China, the crime rate is 1/6 th of that of the United States, and that they execute more than one thousand criminals each year, most within 10 days of their arrest? If you havn't visited foreign countries in the capacity of a military person, (as I have), you would not be able to truly understand what righst a citizen of these United States has. Tourist resorts offer the cream of crop to all those that visit. It is very unlikely that you will actually see how residents of certain countries truly live. In Brazil, roadside executions still exist. In some countries, police brutality and corruption is expected. Most of it is due to the lack of pay the officers make. If you still feel strongly against the police, can you honestly admit to even yourself that you were in the right the last time you were stopped or arrested? Most people hate the police because they were arrested by them on one or more occassions. If you were never arrested by them, then I must admit that you are a very objective person that must have been taken advantage of. If you were arrested by the police and got more than you expected for committing the crime that you did, then I can also see how you have become bitter and subjective. You must have expected more leniency when you committed the act. We as police officers are judged as a whole for the actions of the few that actually commit the acts of brutality or abuse of others. There are many cops out there, including myself that will not tolerate brutality. Police are a paramilitray organization that depend on one another. Every time we arrive for duty, it could be our last. That is no bullshit. I was off this past New Years Eve when my supervisor and co-worker were shot. I feel a sense of responsibility even though it was my scheduled day off. Could I have prevented the incident? Would you have assisted? If you are ever away from your family when they are in need of assistance, (for example, two armed felons are breaking into your home while your wife and child are asleep), would you like the police to respond and risk their lives in saving the lives of your family?, or would you rather some crackhead that is HIV positive neter that house and rape your wife? These things do happen. Some people are only aware of how rude a police officer was during a traffic stop. I need to stop here as I need to further educate myself on police brutality for my school paper. Maybe you should join me.

here's a glance at India: West Bengal, India; Victims of torture are most often those who are socially and economically disadvantaged, including women, children and "denotified tribes". Mirroring methods used elsewhere in the country, beatings (with fists, rifle butts and lathis), kicking and slapping are common-place. Other methods of torture include rape and electric shocks. There are reportedly a number of "notorious" police officers who are known for particular methods of torture or for a high number of deaths in their custody. There have been numerous reports of police asking for money from relatives of people taken into custody on petty criminal charges. In many cases when the family is unable to raise the money, the detainee is reportedly tortured. Mohammad Alam was arrested on a petty criminal charge and tortured to death in 1995 after police demanded his mother pay them Rs.4000 ($86) for his release. His mother, Jabeda Khatoon, has been fighting a legal case against the police officers allegedly responsible. However, despite warrants in 1996, 2000 and 2001, they have avoided arrest. Jabeda has received repeated threats from police and local criminals and has been offered out of court settlements amounting to Rs.50,000 ($1,500), which she has refused to accept even though she only earns Rs.150 ($3) a month. Other elements in the criminal justice system such as public prosecutors, the courts and doctors, have also ignored systematic patterns of abuse in policing, due to overload, lack of resources, intimidation or disinterest. Still hate the US?

If police officers do not have these qualities people would prefer to live under oppression and injustice rather than going to the police since they know that applying to the police will bring them additional problems." Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai speaking on Radio Afghanistan, 21 November 2002. "That night they... beat us with a cable until morning. It was winter, and they laid us on the ground. They put tyres and stones on our backs from afternoon until midnight. When I became unconscious they poured water on us." "Salim" a teenager, arrested in Afghanistan at the end of 2001, describing his treatment at the hands of the police. ????????????????

PENANG, Malaysia Police brutality rules, quietly, in Malaysia By Anil Netto - The 10 Malaysian murder suspects claimed they were forced to drink their own urine, with two claiming they were made to eat their own feces as well. One suspect told a court in Perak state on December 20 that the police had threatened to take his pregnant wife to the police station to induce an abortion if he did not admit to the crime. These were on top of the men's allegations that the police had beaten them with a rubber hose and gave them electric shocks. The magistrate hearing their case told the suspects - who were unrepresented - to make police reports and ''to think deeply'' when making the charges as they would have to face the consequences of any false allegations. None of the suspects has filed an official report about police mistreatment, though they had been taken to hospital for a check-up. According to a senior police officer, the suspects declined to make the reports. Still, activists say the allegations bring to the fore concern about the mistreatment of suspects at the hands of the police, though the issue is not widely discussed here. That the men had been charged with the brutal murder of five people may partly explain why few Malaysians blinked when the suspects began complaining about the way they were being treated by the police. Indeed, their story did not merit front-page treatment in most of Malaysia's mainstream press. Chua says that during the first 24 hours, suspects have no access to anyone, and ''so a lot of things can happen''.

O.K., the last one....Liberia....without a mention of racism.... Liberia, Africa; Monday, 9 July, 2001, 04:01 GMT 05:01 UK Liberian police brutality under spotlight Van drivers and passengers were flogged By Sam Howard in Monrovia Police in Liberia have come under the spotlight again for their heavy-handedness. Last Monday several members of the Special Operation Division (Sod) publicly flogged over 50 bus drivers and passengers who refused to pay bribes to them. For some time now the police and bus drivers have been carrying out "open secret" traffic operations in a bid to ensure free movement without hindrance. The Gardnersville check point in the suburb of Monrovia has always been a trouble spot. Several changes have taken place there but to no avail. Both the police and bus drivers had conformed to bribery. Poorly paid police generated their daily food money by allowing the drivers to pass their checkpoint without disturbance. In return each driver paid $10 Liberian. But their secret agreement came unstuck on Monday when the police introduced a new variable into the equation. They asked each driver to increase the money to $15 Liberian - less than $0.50. The refusal of the first band of drivers resulted in severe public flogging. Other drivers decided to protest by parking their 50 buses. Confusion ensued and several drivers and passengers were flogged while others were rushed to hospital. Police Director Paul Mulbah took the blame, disrobed one of his officers, and later apologized to the drivers and the people of Liberia for the undisciplined behavior of his officers. Excesses Liberia's post-war police, especially members of the special operation division, are poorly trained and paid. Members of the Sod are usually armed with AK-47 and other pistols. They are fond of committing excesses in the streets, which the police director has continuously frowned on. But most of these police officers have, like other civil servants, not been paid for months probably due to the current economic constraints facing the nation. They use this as an excuse. "I have not been paid for the last six months so how on earth do you expect me to survive if I don't asked drivers for money?" -Junior Police Officer "The current police establishment is infested with ex-fighters who are not trained at all." He said the excesses of the police should be attributed to poor training. The special operation division of the Liberia national police was created by the Taylor administration in 1997. The Taylor Administration was established by the late Police Director Joe Tate, President Charles Taylor's cousin. It was and is still the only group in the police allowed to carry AK-47 rifles primarily to combat various crimes and the wave of armed robberies that were engulfing the capital after the civil war. Several former combatants and other individuals were shot on site on allegations of armed robbery. They received a pat on the back when the crime rate subsided. Imagine if the integrity that still stands in the U.S. was lost.....We could all sit home and generate webpages of hated against each other.........use your skills for something positive. Don't be a hater.
