Ron, thank you very much for sending your message. I call all
people who want to get in touch with me.
You suppose surely that most people from Sarajevo live from hand to
mouth. Despite the war and difficult life, people of Sarajevo do like
culture, especially theater. Bosnian people can't make money.
Performances are running continuously and to get a ticket is very
difficult. Theater has a nice tradition here. Today the city gives the
impression of a modern cultural center: theaters, galleries, publishing
houses and newspaper offices, TV and radio houses, philharmonic orchestra,
cinema and film companies, poetry readings etc.
The People's Theater is one of the oldest cultural institutions in
the town. It was founded in 1921, but the first theatrical performance
took place some decades earlier. Sarajevo was host to the Yougoslav
Festival of Short and Experimental Plays, and event international
in character and giving expression to the most up-to-date theatrical
trends.
In the future, I want to publish a book of stories of ordinary
people in war. Many people lost their families, became poor, became
crippled.
I want to write about the people who were civilian prisoners at
concentration-camps and about children without parents. I wish to
collect their stories of war in my book. I would like to publish this book
in USA. In my opinion, these stories give much better information about
Bosnian people than TV news and newspapers.
I like very much American modern pop and rock music, as like most
of young people. My favorite director of film is David Lynch. He made an
excellent film series Twin Peaks. During my studying, I read many books of
American writer, William Faulkner. His literature made a great impression
on me.
Finally, I want to ask you something and I look forward to hear
from you. These are my questions:
1. Can young Americans find job after finishing their studies?
2. Are there any new tendencies in American modern society?
3 How do Americans live today?
4. What kind of professions are the most popular in American society?

DAY TO DAY WITH SARAJEVO RESIDENTS
From March 29 to April 10, 1995, the residents of Sarajevo will have the
chance to respond to questions posed to them by the Internet community.
The conversations will focus primarily on aspects of daily life in Sarajevo,
a city that has been under siege for three years.
The teams of journalists from the World Media Network will only distribute
the actual conversations that take place from day to day. But it will be up
to the residents of Sarajevo to decide which questions to answer.

killings and you don't seem to show any interest for what is happening
here. I still work at the surgery covered with blood and flesh. It still

I am taking this chance to say something about my family and our
personal tragedy. I was born in Sarajevo 1942, and I am of Croat
nationality. My father was killed during the second world war so I don't
even remember him. Mother and my only brother had died during the war in
1992.
In 1965. I married a girl from Croatia. We are both Roman Catholic.
Our two sons have been killed during the war. The older one Dragan was born
in 1966. and the younger one in 1975. My wife and I use to work before the
war, we had an apartment and you could say that we belonged to middle
class.
These three war years have been the worst years in our lives. Both
our sons have been killed, our apartment is demolished by a 150 mm grenade
and it is not possible to live in it. We slept in shelters, we were hungry
and thirsty but above all we were scared.
Eight days after our place was ruined our youngest son was killed.
He was only 17. He was killed defending his city. Our older son became our
only comfort. We were suffering bravely and with dignity thinking that war
will be over soon.
Then, as if one tragedy was not enough, our older son was killed
nine moths later. He was playing football. Two grenades fell and many young
people were killed. Among them was Dragan. Our entire world fell apart.
Many friends had left the Sarajevo so we were left alone without
anybody to comfort us in the greatest sadness in the world. What worse
could happen to a parent but to lose his kids.
Now we are only surviving. I'm trying to find somebody to help me
because I have nothing, I don't work anymore, and I don't have anybody that
could help me. I have visited all relief agencies in Sarajevo looking for a
job. I was trying to find something to help me and my wife. To help us to
survive. When I asked humanitarian organization Caritas for a job, they
said they do not need me. I have asked Bosnian and Croatian sides to help
me, but nobody seems to care.
My wife is very ill and she's an invalid. When our kids were killed
she had a nervous breakdown and she has a heart problem. She's helpless and
she depends on me. We are trying to survive on humanitarian help and you
are very well aware what kind of help this is. Every three months we
receive 50 DM from Shehid Fund and 35 DM as a pension. Sometimes Caritas
gives us some food that is very similar to humanitarian help.
You may wonder why we are still in Sarajevo. We are finding comfort
in visiting the Lav cemetery where our sons are buried. Both of our sons
received the "Golden Lily" (decoration) after their deaths.
We don't have anybody abroad, neither do we have the money to
succeed somewhere in the world. We just want to ask the few left good men
in the world to accept us as godfathers and help us to leave this horrible
situation.
We are very grateful and we are sorry if we took your time. With

The people of Sarajevo have not been forgotten. I read the New York Times
every day, and there are frequent reports about Sarajevo and Bosnia. TV
news tires of subjects that are no longer *new*, and loses interest in
problems that are not quickly solved. In the US, the TV audience is
watching the murder trial of football star O.J.Simpson. But for the many
people who still care to know about Bosnia, the best newspapers still
report new developments and watch carefully for signs of hope that peace
will return and those guilty of war crimes will be punished. You are not
forgotten.
I believe this dialogue with outsiders is a potential embarrassment for
Europeans and Americans. Our questions often reveal how poorly informed we
have chosen to be. That we listen to what you have to tell us seems to me
far more important than what we choose to ask. I hope this won't keep you
from answering the questions we would ask if we knew how.
I address this message to SOSEVIC ANESA because I have also studied
literature and have great gratitude for writers living and dead who help me
keep faith in the possibilities of being human. Literature helps me feel
alive and hopeful when the world is full of death and destruction. I would
like to know more from you about the written and spoken words, music and
other artistic expression that have sustained you in these years of siege.

I like very much American modern pop and rock music, as like most
of young people. My favorite director of film is David Lynch. He made an
excellent film series Twin Peaks. During my studying, I read many books of
American writer, William Faulkner. His literature made a great impression
on me.
Finally, I want to ask you something and I look forward to hear
