Messages from/to Sarajevo for 2 April 95 22 h
Message 1
DAY TO DAY WITH SARAJEVO RESIDENTS
Sorry for the "quoted-printable" stuff (=46...). It was a mistake.
=46rom March 29 to April 10, 1995, the residents of Sarajevo will=
have the
chance to respond to questions posed to them by the Internet community.
The conversations will focus primarily on aspects of daily life in=
Sarajevo,
a city that has been under siege for three years.
The teams of journalists from the World Media Network will only distribute
the actual conversations that take place from day to day. But it=
will be up
to the residents of Sarajevo to decide which questions to answer.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN AFTER APRIL 10, 1995?
Sarajevo On Line isn't meant as a one-shot operation. Besides there=
is a
direct link with Sarajevo:
The ZaMir (for Peace) Transnational Network is an electronic mail=
network
in the region of former Yugoslavia especially dedicated to helping=
peace
oriented people and groups, humanitarian organisations, NGO's and=

[Suppressed by the editor.]
* 3/ Letter from Sheri Fink, Stanford University student and leader=
of the
group SAGE (Students Against GEnocide -- Project Bosnia)
[Suppressed by the editor.]
Question:
Dear Amina and Amra,
It's so nice to write and know that someone in Sarajevo will receive=
my
letter quickly! First, I want to let you know that there are students=
from
all over the world who care about the people of your country,
Bosnia-Herzegovina. We have been trying to raise awareness of the=
situation
there, help with humanitarian aid efforts and pressure our political
leaders to take responsible action. In fact, on April 6 over 100=
campuses
and cities will hold demonstrations marking the third anniversary=
of the
war in your country. It is sponsored by SAGE (Students Against Genocide)
Coalition.
We understand that the Bosnian people have been subjected to shelling,
"ethnic cleansing", internment in rape camps and many other horrors=
as the
victims of mainly Serb nationalist aggressors for three years. Most=
of us
believe that our governments have the moral responsibility to either=
1)
enforce the numerous UN mandates on the protection of innocent civilians=
or
2) allow the Bosnian people the means to defend themselves. Many=
of us also
believe that, after three long years of negotians, a credible threat=
of
force by Bosnian Government troops is the only way left to end the=
war and
convince the Serb nationalists to agree to peace (as you know, they=
are the
only side in this war who have not signed the current peace plan).=
So, we
support the lifting of the arms embargo on Bosnia which has prevented=
your
government from protecting its civilians.
With winter and the ceasefire ending, our question to you is this:
- What do you think our governments can do to help end the Serb nationalist
siege of Bosnian cities like Sarajevo, the ethnic cleansing, and=
the
blockage of humanitarian aid to innocent civilians?
- What can we do to help bring justice and peace to the Bosnian people?
You and the other brave citizens of Sarajevo, of all religions, who=
remain
in the city and remain committed to the ideals of multi-ethnic tolerance=
--
you have our highest, greatest admiration.
Sincerely,
Shery Fink
Stanford University School of Medicine
(P.S. Tokmo family sends their love!)
Answers from Sarajevo :
=46ROM: AMINA AND AMRA - "BISER" sarajevo=20
TO : SHERY FINK - STUDENTS AGAINST GENOCIDE
Dear Sheri ,
we are sitting infront of camera on the sixth flour of architect=
building .
Yesterday we made contact with mr Bertrand and he offerd us to come=
here
and make contact with you. we received the message from you and=
first of
all we would like to express our thanks for your kidness. Your gouverment
is the only wich is able to help us in Bosnia. we think that your=
group
should support a court for war crimes in BH. Sending of humanitarian=
aid
is not first thing wich the world has to do. We would like that justice
finds a place in our country. One of the way is allowing the bosnian
people the means to defend themselves. We have to go to Biser and=
in the
afternoon we shall go to Amna's parents with mr Bertrand.=20
we are sending regards to poor family Tokmo, and also for you and=

=46rom Mesud Imamovic
Mesud is married to Bisera and they have two daughters: Maca who=
is living
in Sarajevo (she has lost a arm two years ago during a shelling)=
and Amna
who has left Sarajevo in december 94 with his husband Memen Tokmo=
and her
daughter Anesa, three years old.
Dear Amna, dear Memen and dear Anesa,
We are fine here in Sarajevo. All is OK but you know we have no gas=
because
we are on the frontline. It snows from many days and we don't need
anithing... but a bottle of brandy (only one). And You ? How do you=
live in
San Francisco ? Please say to us in details what is your new life=
? And
Anesa, the gold of my life ? What is she doing without her grand-parents=
?
We have seen today your sister Maca and, with his husband, she sends=
to you
"best regards". Please, say to us if there is any possibility where=
you are
to solve his problem ?
Do you think you can find a work in Stanford University ?
I hope you can answer by email in the next two days.
Daddy
To Amna Tokmo
=46rom Bisera Imamovic
Bisera is Besud's wife in Sarajevo and she writes to her daughter=
Amna who
has left Sarajevo for san Francisco, California.
Dear Mines,
Thank you for your email. Daddy is very kind with me and the life=
is rather
quiet here, even with the frontline two hundred meters from home.=
I'm so
happy to send you a letter and to be sure that you can reed it. Please,
answer to us. You are missing at home and I'm not so young... When=
will it
be possible to see all together with your sister Maca.
You know I ca'nt find my medicines but I feel well.
I'm so happy to know you are pregnant. I hope your daughter Anesa=
will not
jalous, she's so kind.
You miss to your mother

To Sheri Fink
=46rom Mesud and Bisera Imamovic
Amna Tokmo's parents want to thank Sheri Fink, a young student leader=
who

* Questions from Pekka Littow, Finnish Architect in France
--The city is in ruins. Are you able to look towards the=
future
and reconstruction? Or is it too early?
--Do you want to reconstruct the city as it was it before?
--For you, what are the architectural symbols of Sarajevo?=
What
has happened to them? Are they able to be restored?
--Or do you forsee a new modern Sarajevo?
--Would you like foreign architects to come and build there?=
Or is
there a nationalism in architecture? =20
--There is little work for architects here. Do you have=
any work
for a Finnish architect?
=46ROM:Reuf Kolude, architect in Sarajewo,<rkoluder@atge.automail.com>
TO:Pekka Littow, Finnish Architect
I would appreciate a direct E mail contact, but now I'll try to answer=
some
of your questions:
_ Interiors are renewing right now, not the way we would be glad=
to see,
because Sarajevo has already some standard, being an university center.
-- For building and reconstructing, some ideas are being discussed,=
but
there will be some more war und destruction before Sarajevo earns=
to start
building itself.
-- Symbols of Sarajevo can be restored, and should be upgraded I=
hope.
-- Heritage and new concepts must live together=20
-- Of course we would like everybody to be present here, no nationalisme
as an idea, cause it is like a small room with no doors.
-- There will be a lot of work, but its a question of money, investments.
Right now there is some work and money in Mostar, thanks to the=
European
Union, =20
-- Address directly by E-mail
* Questions from Sophie Cabannes, French architect, Paris =20
--Are there woman architects in Sarajevo? =20
----Are you able to hear of architectural trends outside=
of Bosnia? =20
--Do you feel that your architecture is European? Or is=
there
something special about Balkan architecture?

* Questions from: Matthew Kennedy <kenn7365@tao.sosc.osshe.edu>=20
=20
To Whom It May Concern-
My name is Matthew Kennedy. I'm an American student. I'm earning=
my degree
in Political Science from Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colorado.=
I expect
to complete it by August. I'm taking a year off, and returning to=
Fort
Lewis College in August 1996 to work on a 2nd Bachelor's degree in=
history.
In both degree's my area of emphasis is the former Soviet Union and=
Eastern
Europe. I'm currently working on an Independent Study on the Nation-State
and the History of Yugoslavia. I have some questions:=20
- How did Marshall Tito influence the history of what is the=
former
Yugoslavia?
- How was he able to hold together a country of a variety of
different ethnic and religious groups?
- And how did his governing style impact Bosnia-Hercegovina?
My e-mail address is kenn7365@tao.sosc.osshe.edu=20
Thank you, I look forward to hearing from you.=20
Sincerely,
Matthew Kennedy
=46ROM:Adil Kulenovic
TO:kenn7365@tao.soc.osshe.edu
I am a director-in-chief of the Independent Radio and TV Station=
called
"Studio 99" in Sarajevo and soon we are starting a newspaper also=
called
"Circle 99".I am also a journalist and a professor on the University=
of
Philosophy in Sarajevo teaching sociology and philosophy.=20
Marshall Tito influenced the history of the former Yugoslavia very
positivly .His ideology is something that can be disccused about=
,but
practical policy gave good results. In 50 years of his rulement we=
had 50
years of peace and more freedom then today nationalistic parties=
are
offering us.Of course,we today dream about different ideology(of=
human
rights) which will be fullfiled one day.
This governing style made impact on Bosnia and Herzegovina in two=
ways.On
one side it was positive- when we speak about the national freedom=
and
rights of Muslims(for the first time they could declare themselves=
in
public as Muslims) and the negative impact is when we speak about=
Bosnia's
identity as a state and when we speak abot democratic culture of=
citizens.
