I am a volunteer English tutor for a woman from Sarajevo. She also wanted to find her friends when she arrived in the United States. I'm sure you have probably found this out by now ( I know you sent your message about 2 months ago), but have you tried the Red Cross? I got the information for my friend here and she had to go to the office in person and fill out an information form and they will help you locate your friends. I hope this will help you. Good luck!!
