It seems that the camp manager (whose phone line we use) has cut off the phone while (allegedly) awaiting a list of phone charges, etc. from the post regarding last month's (allegedly) huge phone bill. And it seems that us (our project and users) are the suspects for running the phone bill up. Never mind that our xpoint records show that we cost him less than a week's worth of cigarettes for an entire month and a half. And never mind the possibility that his staff in the kitchen ran up his phone charges while he was under arrest in Split last month facing charges that he extorted from the King Zvonimir Fund (which means money he [allegedly] pocketed that was meant for people in Bistrica). The investigation is still underway, of course. This is occurring only a couple or three weeks after I liberated our newly donated photo-copy machine from his office. We received the donation a full two months ago, but the camp manager met the installation guys in Supetar when they arrived off the ferry and promptly installed it in his office. It's safely with us now, but he kindly used all the toner up and cost us many days of stress. Meanwhile, the regional ODPR person came last week to investigate (primarily me) and our project. She'll return on Wednesday with her verdict. I wonder if she liked the Feral Tribunes we had stacked in our room. But the good news: We've opened a "reading room" (in our computer room), where we place Ferals, Nacionals, and the next-best papers including some from B/H. Papers are allowed to be checked out, and the Ferals and Nacionals seem to be checked out continuously. Ragib, one of our two coordinators, opens the room daily at 8:00am and cooks coffee. The Woman's Club in Bistrica is showing initiative and their "representative" Marija (who is also one of our project coordinators) has written a letter on their behalf to some conferences requesting assistance in finding wool, etc. (You'll see this posting when we get back on line!) She's also sent some letters out via regular post. We'd appreciate suggestions in regard to her posting! Incidentally, Marija and Ragib are working for free under these pressures, though we're seeking funding for them. Meanwhile, our first newsletter is still in the works, and we'd like to thank DPHR, Vesna and ARK, and Zenska-Infoteka for their support in sending us information (including names/addresses of human rights, women's, etc. groups). Anyone else who thinks of something that might be of interest to include in our soon-to-be newsletter for people who are refugees - please send it! But please write either (kod) "Marija Pocrnja" or "Ragib Mujkanovic" on the envelope if you send it postal mail. (Our last two things have come to us already opened.) And thank you to Wolfgang Sheur for his project-saving 500dm that is helping us buy some little things we need, such as newspapers, books, and coffee. X. Katherine. ## CrossPoint v3.02 ## From notes@igc.apc.org Tue May 28 05:29:36 1996 Received: from igc7.igc.apc.org (192.82.108.35) by MediaFilter.org with SMTP (Apple Internet Mail Server 1.0); Tue, 28 May 1996 05:29:37 -0500 Received: from cdp.igc.apc.org (cdp.igc.apc.org [192.82.108.1]) by igc7.igc.apc.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id XAA26341; Mon, 27 May 1996 23:51:36 -0700 (PDT) Date: 27 May 1996 23:17:19 Reply-To: Conference "zamir.chat" From: Edward Agro Subject: Nonviolence in Yugoslavia (fwd) To: Recipients of zamir-chat-l Message-ID: <199605280613.XAA01201@igc3.igc.apc.org> X-Gateway: conf2mail@igc.apc.org Errors-To: owner-zamir-chat-l@igc.apc.org Precedence: bulk Lines: 140 [Uzdrzzavanje od nasilja u Yugoslaviji - On je izvjestaj o "SSkoli bez nasilja", projekat Mirovna Pokreta Panceva; distribuiram ga na amerikanske aktiviste. - ed] [Note: Pancevo is about 12 mi. from Belgrade, Yugoslavia. W h y Violence present in political institutions can be considered as a consequence and a reflection of violent behavior common in our family, school and social groups. Children raised in a rigid family and school atmosphere, not providing any alternative for violence, obedience and punishment, become themselves violent and incapable of developing their creative forces. From these large groups of adolescents its easiest to mobilize warriors, and it also lowers the creative resistance to nationalism. W h o More than 20 teachers, pedagogues, psychologists, parents, students... H o w Workshops, researches, seminars, bulletin, roundtable meetings, exhibitions... 1994: The project SCHOOL WITHOUT VIOLENCE began with realization with the seminar "Overcoming violence by education", that has been organized from July 12 to July 14 in cooperation with a group Frieden initiative Konstanz, from Germany. The psychologist Leo Lensing, the therapist in the counseling office for the delinquents in Konstanz, demonstrated to the group of some 30 teachers of elementary a d high schools, pedagogues, psychologists, and students, some of the methods, techniques, and skills that he uses when working with young violators. A seminar and workshop under the title "New methods in educating by the Freine method" was held on Thursday, November 17, in the Centre for Women "Isidora". On the invitation of the Pancevo Peace Movement, which organized the seminar. About 40 professors, pedagogists and psychologists, employed in schools and social institutions in Pancevo, attended. The Freine method was presented by guests from Germany. Reinhard Neumann, a pedagogist, an expert on communication between people and Matthias Heinrichs, a teacher and founder of an elementary school in Darmstadt worked by the Freine method. They demonstrated the principals and techniques of the Freine method which can practically be applied in education. In the period from 18th till 24th November 1994. Aleksandar Weisner held, together with his colleagues, a number of creative workshops with thirty children from the second end third grade of the elementary school "Bratstvo-jedinstvo" from Pancevo. 1995: During the middle of March a poster on institutional violence in schools was printed. Aleksandar Weisner, director of the project "School without Violence", was the editor of the poster; the artist was Sasa Zograf. Five hundred copies of the poster were printed and distributed throughout a few elementary schools or given to education workers. Activists of the German peace organization Friedensinitiative Konstanz, their teacher Ingrid Maurer and psychotherapist Leo Lensing held a workshop for teachers, pedagogues and psychologists. Ms. Maurer talked about her experiences working in and organizing elementary schools in Germany, while Mr. Lensing talked about sexual education in German schools. Workshops were held April 15th, 16th and 18th. Each workshop was attended by about 30 participants. Svetomir Bojanin, professor of the Faculty of Defectology and a neuropsychiatrist at the Institute for Mental Health in Belgrade, held a lecture "Schools in crisis - how to preserve the mental health of children" on June 23rd at the "Batman" club. The lecture was attended by 30 education workers of Pancevo's educational institutions: school pedagogues and psychologists, social workers and representatives of health organizations. From the period November 24th to December 1st, in the office of Pancevo Peace Movement, a seminar about health education was held in cooperation with Soros Foundation Yugoslavia. Through three workshops, attended by about 20 participants, five themes were dealt with: basic sexuality, AIDS, dangers of smoking, dangers of using alcohol and drugs. The aim of this seminar was to provide the participants with new knowledge and skills and to introduce methods for presenting these themes to young people aged 10 - 14. The lecturers were Aco Divac, Slavica Music, Dejan Zagorac and Stanka Brdar, with assistance from Eco-center, a a non-governmental, non-profit organization from Belgrade. During winter, the book "Let's cooperate" (encouraging peaceful conflict solving amongst children) was translated and published. The author of this book is Mildred Masheder. for more information: PANCEVO PEACE MOVEMENT - SCHOOL WITHOUT VIOLENCE Aleksandar Weisner P.O.Box 186 26000 Pancevo, Yugoslavia tel/fax: + 381-13-43-390 non-stop e-mail: PPM_PANCEVO@ZAMIR-BG.ztn.apc.org ----------------------------------------------------------------- Note on email: If you try to communicate with PPM at the ZAMIR-BG address and don't get a reply within a reasonable time (a week or so), try resending via PISMA_TZ@zamir-tz.ztn.apc.org .
