  • Winnipeg's Chief of Police - Jack Ewatski cuts vacation short after claims that Winnipeg Police Officers Dump Drunks On Outskirts Of City - Spring, Summer, Winter and Fall? Winnipeg's chief manager of police returned early from vacation to handle allegations of police wrongdoing raised by Manitoba Department of Justice officials the previous Friday! The allegations from credible sources paint a poor picture of Winnipeg Police in dealing with Manitoba's Aboriginal and Metis communities and this just after an incident where police did not respond to 2 sisters 911 calls for help until the 5th call over a number of hours, that found both women dead upon the police finally arriving! In a twist complainant, Raymond Chartrand who went public with the midnight rides complaint of police misconduct, contacted LERA, who never called back did not follow through with any further actions. Any wonder with LERA's track record? In another twist from the midnight ride situation, Joan Dawkins the Executive Director of the Main Street Project which takes in Main Street area drunks off the street said she received a letter from Manitoba Justice in March 2,000 from Assistant Deputy Wyman Sangster (formerly of the RCMP) asking for assistance in dealing with the midnight rides situation, only to get a reply from Dawkins to the effect that "our staff may feel a reluctance to say anything or do anything which will negatively affect the positive working relationship we enjoy with member of the Winnipeg Police Service, the great majority of whom are committed professionals who respect and protect the interests of the individuals they come into contact with in their work"! Ms Dawkins must live in la la land! On the heels of this, suddenly, the very credible Assistant Deputy Minister, Wyman Sangster resigns citing retirement?! On the heels of the resignation Winnipegger's wake up to a morning Free Press where Nickolas Hurst, it's publisher is now asking Winnipeggers to trust the police as an agency that should be trusted? It is apparent there are so many people wagging their tongues in different directions, there is no direction available to the public or the Winnipeg Police Service making all looking like a sad joke! Readers, what all this boils down to is a severe management/mismanagement problem from the top down in the Winnipeg Police Service with more than just racial overtones going from bad to worse! It shows a very poor selection process in the selection of the Chief of Police by our city politicians, administration who acted more like paralytics than real people in selecting the present chief who exhibits local police culture taint! It shows graphically the need for an independent agency to oversee and investigate police wrongdoing and criminality. When will this City and Province wake up and smell the coffee? How many casualties and victims will it take? Call your city counselors and your MLAs, tell them enough is enough, cut the politics and to get on with the work we are paying them for now that they are elected! Time to put in place the civilian agency to investigate the police on an ongoing basis as soon as it can be legislated into existence and heaven help the politicians if they don't include balls and teeth in its makeup and functions........................................................Coming soon, allegations of Racism rears its head in court, the Manitoba Justice system and with the Winnipeg Police Service in the mass trials of the Manitoba Warriors gang, Canada's first big test of "Participating in a Criminal Organization" provisions of the Criminal Code of Canada.
