Published May 5, 1998 Former sheriff's deputy arrested for buying drugs A former Yuba County sheriff's deputy who is already facing charges of stealing methamphetamine from the department's evidence room was arrested Friday after allegedly buying $40 worth of methamphetamine from a police informant while his 2-year-old son was with him, sheriff's officials said. Yuba County Undersheriff Gary Finch said Bryan J. Gilbert, 30, of Yuba City, was charged with suspicion of possession of methamphetamine, transportation of methamphetamine, child endangerment and committing a felony while on bail. He was booked into the Yuba County Jail and was transferred to another county jail where he was being held on no bail. Gilbert was first arrested March 27 on suspicion of embezzlement and possession of methamphetamine after being accused of stealing the drug from the county evidence room. He pleaded innocent to the charges at an April 20 arraignment hearing in Yuba County Municipal Court. The March arrest was the result of a three-week investigation by the Sheriff's Department and state Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement into suspected evidence tampering. Finch said Gilbert's latest arrest came after Sheriff's Department officials received a tip from an informant last week that a person named "Bryan" had been inquiring about buying methamphetamine from him. "The informant received another call Friday and this call was recorded and revealed the suspect was Bryan Gilbert and he was attempting to buy methamphetamine," Finch said. Finch said that Gilbert told the informant that he did not work at the Sheriff's Department anymore because he was caught taking methamphetamine and then set up a meeting to buy the methamphetamine. Gilbert and the informant met in the parking lot of the McDonald's restaurant on E Street between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., Friday, where Gilbert allegedly bought $40 worth of methamphetamine, Finch said. Sheriff's deputies arrested Gil-bert a few minutes later at the intersection of Third and I streets, Finch said. In addition to the methamphetamine charges, Gilbert is accused of child endangerment because his 2-year-old son was in the vehicle during the alleged drug deal, Finch added. Gilbert's second arrest surprised Finch. "Obviously he's got a problem he has to deal with and this isn't the way," Finch said. "He's not helping matters out by doing this. This just stacks another one up against him." Hired by the department in October 1992, Gilbert served as a road patrol officer and was assigned to the new bicycle patrol unit before being suspended in March. He also was assigned to the county narcotics unit for about one year before being transferred back to road patrol about one year before his suspension. Gilbert was one of seven deputies that tested narcotics for the department at the time of his first arrest. Gilbert was caught after investigators placed a surveillance camera in the evidence room when signs of evidence tampering surfaced. The arrest is the second of a former area sheriff's deputy on suspicion of methamphetamine charges in the last month. Former Sutter County sheriff's Deputy Maurice Reginald Taylor was arrested April 22 after authorities reportedly found a small amount of methamphetamine during a probation search of his Franquette Drive home. Taylor pleaded guilty in January 1997, to one count of possession of methamphetamine and was sentenced to one year in jail, four months probation and ordered to pay $2,000 in restitution. He was released after serving eight months of his sentence.
