           THE ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE PUBLIC

     Today, on 27th June 1995, in the square called Narodni trg,

Split, a group of thugs seized all the copies of the new issue of

The Feral Tribune from newsboys and news vendors at the kiosks,

to tear them ceremonially and burn them down before the numerous

passers-by. They left the Square and went through the centre from

one kiosk to another, threatening the news vendors and taking the

weekly from them by force. The news vendors whose issues had not

been taken away and burnt down, hid theeir issues of The Feral

Tribune and are now frightened to continue selling them.



     Although today's destruction of The Feral Tribune issues was

announced yesterday - when a few issues were burnt down in the

very centre of town - there was no one from the Forces Of Law And

Order to try to prevent the thugs. This violent action cannot

have been unknown to the authorities: the ritual action of

burning down The Feral Tribune issues was attended by reporters

and television cameramen who had been informed about what was

going to happen, when and where.



     We have every good reason to belive and suspect that public

destruction of papers is a part of a wide action that has been taken

recently against The Feral Tribune. A few days ago the Editorial

Staff recived some very serious information and warning saying

that an "operation" was being prepared to definitely prevent the

weekly from coming out. All the recdent pressure on The Feral

Tribune - the imposed sales tax, mobilization of the

Editor-in-Chief, numerous court cases - differs from the new

threat which would be of physical nature.



     We expect the Croatian public, particulary the state

authorities, to react to publicly burning a paper, with the aim to

threaten the news vendors, readers and editorial staff. The

Editorial Staff know of only one case in recent history when

written word was burnt down in town squares. That stake was

bigger than the one today, but fire has an unpleasant feature to

spread. If it happens, The Feral Tribune in not going to be the

ony one whose circulation will burn.
