NO, Is not against the law to stand outside of the homeless shelter in Prescott, AZ for food. It is however against the law to be an illegal alien in AZ. One of the things the police are looking for is identification to prove that any one of these people are in the valley legally. Another thing that the police are looking for are possible thieves. Prescott has been hit by thieves quite a bit recently
Is it a crime to ask them to get off their lazy butts and make them work?
Thats good police procedure! To have all the criminal element in one place and be able to run them for warrants makes good sense and saves patrol time by not having to run these bums down. If the criminals have a warrant they still get their free meal, along with a warm bed.... on the county! Dont buy into this liberal crybaby crap! Being homeless is a lifestyle choice.
You would not believe how many people who have committed serious crimes try to pass off as homeless.
the police do the same in phoenix az. they try and make money or food by holding a sign. they don't say anything to anyone. i dont think they are hurting anything, they are not saying anything,so they are not hurrashing anyone.so if the people want to give to them they can and if not they dont. so why do the police bother them? they better stop and think, it could happen to them
as much stuff that is happening in phoenix az it doesn't look like they would have time to bother the homeless. maybe if they didn't bother them less crime would be happening. i know they know most of the homeless around there area, and know which ones that are doing nothing besides holding a sign . not bothering anyone
OK IF COPS ARN'T PICKING ON THE HOMELESS, THAN WHY DO YOU SEE KIDS AND ADULTS HOLDING SIGNS UP TO WASH YOUR CAR,CRACK IN YOUR WINDOW SHEILD WILL REPAIR AND ECT.ECT. AND I COULD GO ON AND ON. THE COPS DON'T DO ANYTHING TO THEM. SO WHATS UP WITH THAT? THE HOMELESS THAT ARE JUST HOLDING A SIGN THAT SAYS I'M HOMELESS,NOT SAYING ANYTHING. THAT IS NOT WRONG HURTING ANYONE,BUT I GUESS IF YOUR POOR AND TRYING TO EAT AND NOT GO HUNGURY,I GUESS IN PHOENIX IT'S A CRIME FOR THEM TO EAT. THEY CAN'T EVEN GET FOOD OR CLOTHING AND ECT. OUT OF A TRASH CAN BECAUSE ITS A CRIME TOO. BUT THE OTHER ONES THAT ARE HOLDING SIGNS THEY ARE YEALING AT YOU AND JUMPING OUT ALMOST RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR CAR BUT THATS NOT A CRIME IN PHOENIX
SORRY BUT NOT ALL OF THEM HAVE A CHOICE, YOU SHOULD GO OUT AND CHECK THINGS OUT BEFORE YOU STATE THINGS LIKE THAT. BUT YES YOU ARE VERY RIGHT ON SOME.
february, 2004: very judgemental people, you feedbackers are...the police do this BECAUSE THEY CAN. it's easy pickin's. i have seen the line at the salvation army, and there are very few if any hispanics ever there, so the b.s. about checking for illegal aliens is b.s. [the illegals are working for slave wages at the greenhouse in chino valley] as for homelessness being a lifestyle choice, maybe it is for some, i think not for most. either way, it should not be illegal. standing in line for a free meal should not be illegal, either. having been arrested myself recently for a lifestyle choice and deprived of my right to effective legal counsel because i did not have $3,000 to hire a lawyer, it seems to me that being poor is still illegal in yavapai county.
I too have sprinted past beggars in the past. God forbid I give up some spare change;they refuse to work, right? Well, since your life is absent of problems, why don't you contribute your time and money and help these people who call their homes the streets. Are all people on the streets there because they want to be, No. Are all homeless suffering from mental disorders, No. But for those that have problems, let us get them help. Don't act like the homeless are all a bunch crazed maniacs. And, they aren't all drug users either. Try talking to one. Sure they have made some bad decisions, but haven't we all. Our two main purposes on this earth are to take care of each other and the earth. Can you look beyond your own problems( bills, wife, husband, divorce, kids, credit cards,etc...) to show compassion. Cops have an obligation to product it's citizens, but wait aren't these people citizens too? Sure, there might be some illegals and criminals amoungst them. I suggest that eating is not an option, whether criminal or not. I think the cops timing is poor, at best. I think most of us have smoked a joint or two, and far too many of us are hooked, unneccesarily, on prozac and various other narcoitcs. So, put down the stone, Pharisee. Want to feel better about yourself, try giving to others(I don't say this to people with real clinical depression). Nothing you say here will make a difference. Only taking your head out of the sand and talking to government officials will. What touch, moves, and inspires you. The question you need to ask yourself is this: Do you want homeless in prison (tax money), or do you want them rehabilitated. Answer this question, and take the action neccesary to aid this problem. Again, said here will make a difference. Insights without action- USELESS. I am holding an even for the homeless in September. anybody interested? justin.k.thomas@us.army.mil or jthomasexcel@hotmail.com forum leader?
i remember when this happened here in prescott i was there that day, mostly all the cops were suspended.
I am a homeless 22 year old female in Prescott, I have been eating at the salvation army for weeks now and luckily I havent ran into the cops in the feed line yet. I think they are cruel assholes and I wish they would find something better to do, like maybe fight some crime.
I was a prosperous family man in the verde valley ounce and then after a divorce and a xwife that cried lies to the local law enforcement I was jailed and lost all include rights to my son, I soon found myself homeless and jobless trying to fight the wrongful accusations. This was in no means a choice and became a vicious cycle, try getting work when you cant clean your self or your clothing and have to walk for miles to find shelter where ever possible and your main goal for the day is to fill your belly to rid the terrible pains of hunger. most people ride on your assumptions of others or should I say ignorance ha, try walking in the next mans or women's shoes, most of you would perish without your neighbor or that least likely friend that came to your aid. I met the kindest and most giving HOMELESS people during that time and it has become a very valuable life lesson to me. All should experience such a lesson. Thank you HOMELESS PEOPLE and I Love You Lucas Hill, your Father
Sounds all too familiar, Verdy Valley courts just want to own you and your wallet, they could care less about you or your family. Throw you in jail and sort it out later and you become just another # for the prosecuters list of convictions for that year. Im sorry that i help pay these peoples paychecks.
yesterday,5-20-05, my name is jon darrell kaufman . i live in prescott arizona. about 8 weeks ago i fled this state out of fear for the safety of self and the two most precious things i have, that being my two daughters emily and hannah. i had to leave them behind, there mother has taken a divorce decree and turened it into a certificate of title ! in other words she thinks the girls are owened by her ! i had no reason to come back to this police state ever again ! after being in the state of california for about 5 weeks i made a cell phone call to emily and hannah's home as i had none many times since leaving arizona. the step father answered the phone and when i asked to speake to emily i was told that she was in the emergency room at that very moment , she had tried to take her life ! the only reason on earth for me to ever come back to this hell hole was hearing this cry for help from my emily. i was back in prescott the next day wanting nothing more than to excerise my rights as a father to my child emily ! hannah babe i love you too ! as i asked the mother for information (documentation about what happened in the emergency room that night) and also any other information prier to this event, it became clear to me after 2 weeks of receiving absoultly nothing from the mother, atrip to the prescott police department was a place wher i could go for help.when i finished telling 2 officers my concern for the inability to access information about my child who thought the only cure for her life was to take it, i heard this from the lips of one of prescott's finest "WE THINK THAT YOU ARE HERE FOR NO OTHER REASON THAN TO BUILD A CASE " who ever reads this i can only say these words spoken to me by a uniformed peace officer yesterday afternoon 5-20-05, forced me to feel what my daughter emily was and still may be felling. the value of my fathership in emily and hannah too was the way this man pissed all over me! i am so confused . i know that the reader may not be able to understand this letter . i am sorry for that ! i am forced to stay in a place i don't want to be ! i can't leave untili know my baby (s) are happy and safe !i was told something more yesterday evening with those crule words ! i turned aroud and left after hearing them ,knowing that a case indeed was being built ! i was hog tied last night ! something else is comming my way and i can't run from it ! ilove you emily and hannah kaufman! your daddy loves you ! that is the only thing left and it can never be tied down !
My wife and I are currently in Prescott, AZ. We have found NO help for shelter from here to Phoenix. Apparently no one want to help married couples who are down on their luck. Everyone suggests we split up and go to different shelters, however the only women's shelter only takes battered women. I am not about to hit my wife for her to have a place to stay. We are stuck living in our car while trying to look for work.
I THINK THAT IS CRAZY IF THE HOMELESS ARE ONLY STANDING IN LINE WAITING FOR A MEAL AND NOT COMMITING A CRIME THEN THE POLICE SHOULD NOT HARASS THEM. THE POLICE DEPARTMENTS ALL THROUGHOUT THE US NEEDS TO BE LOOKED AT BUT THE POLICE HARASS ALOT OF PEOPLE FOR NO REASON.
Prescott Az has many injustices that can be attributed to both the police force all well as the corrupt District attorneys office!
I was a nurse in Prescott for many years (1976-2000) before retiring to travel with my husband Calvin (my husband passed in February of 2003). I'm sad to hear that the situation in Prescott has degenerated to such a degree. Perhaps the problem has to do with what is essentially a small town police force attempting to cope with growing pains as the city becomes larger. In my position at Yavapai Regional Medical Center I came in contact with quite a few police officers, but many of them were older and remembered when the town was mostly open range and dirt roads. I imagine most of those officers are gone, along with much of what they remember. I'd be very interested to hear more concerning news from Prescott. Thank you for sharing your personal stories, Lucas Hill, Justin Thomas and Jon Darrell Kaufman. Have thing improved for you? I pray that God will embrace you all in your times of need. Sincerely, ja_eldon@yahoo.com
Somebody said: Thats good police procedure! If the criminals have a warrant they still get their free meal, along with a warm bed.... on the county! Dont buy into this liberal crybaby crap! Being homeless is a lifestyle choice. Let me straighten you out on a couple of things. 1) You've been listening to too much Rush Limbaugh; hunger and freezing is a lifestyle choice? You have very little imagination, and spouting something like that makes it clear that you have been fully indoctrinated. It's too bad Twilight Zone-style justice doesn't really exist so you could learn something about the subject. 2) If I turn on 1490am all I hear is crybaby crap, and it sure isn't coming out of liberals, pal. Everybody will crying, I assure you, by the time Bush is out of office and the economy collapses (economists on both the left and right have announced that this is coming). 3) I am a proud liberal, I'm also successful and financially secure. I don't have a whole lot of sympathy for the legions of panhandlers, either, or the Work-for-Food scam artists. But it is nothing but "compassionate conservatism" and the bigotry with which it goes hand in hand that lumps all unfortunate people into the same category, and to imply that the poor are all of "the criminal element" is moronic and inaccurate. There's two kinds of media---mainstream conservative and ultra-conservative (Fox and its minions); stop letting them define things for you, stop letting them feed you the easy-to-parrot partyline. You're not a rebel, though I know that's what you believe, unless all you're rebelling against is thinking for yourself.
Why is the focus always on cops? Did any of you liberal cry babies ever think that the police might be ordered to do these kind of things because of citizen complaints? Some moron stated something along the line of "why do the police pick on them, they need to stop and think, it could happen to them". What an IDIOT!!!!! If they listen to that moron they probablly will be out of work. These people are all the same until something happens to them. How do you think they would act if the police responded like this: Oh, you were robbed at gun-point? I'm sure they were just hungry and were not really going to shoot you. PEOPLE, IF YOU THINK LIKE A LIBERAL IDIOT, YOU WILL BE VICTIMIZED!!!!! It has happened several times in Chicago. Women stop in the areas where the homeless frequent to give them food out of the kindness of their hearts because they feel sorry for them. Guess what happened next? THEY BECAME RAPE VICTIMS!!!
Asking for identification is not a crime. And the only ones that should be worried about having an ID check are the criminals. I was asked for ID while parked in my car while talking on the cell phone late at night in a parking lot since i don't like to use it while driving. Big deal, it took 5 minutes and he was on his way. Now finger printing. That would be a good idea and has been started by the sheriffs department in phoenix. If you get stopped for something, then you get finger printed. And yes ppl whine about how they don't like it? Why? Are they planning on robbing a store. Having prints on file only hurts criminals. In fact if everyone was finger printed then insurance rates would go down since illegals wouldn't get away with as much as they do. For example when an illegal drunk from mexico totalled my car and lawyers wouldn't take the case saying he'd just hide.
Police shouldn't harm the homeless just because they want to. They should treat the homeless just like other people who are not homeless.
