  • Noted Winnipeg Free Press writer Val Werier slams Manitoba's Law Enforcement Review Agency (LERA). With a backdrop already colored like a wild west show the Winnipeg Police Service and LERA were made the target of this famous editorial writer. The main thrust of the article was that in this day and age police are incapable of investigating themselves, which in the Winnipeg Police Service's case seems like time and time again! It was cited how the Toronto Police Service looked to its brother in the form of the scandal ridden Los Angeles Police for information how it should conduct itself. The results of that experiment are already well known in Canada, all negative. One can only wonder if the Winnipeg Police Service did the same as it seems the problems and their ideas of solutions are the same. In the case of the provincial Law Enforcement Review Agency (LERA), the government has given the public an agency, as usual, so benign it only serves as useless window dressing without power and teeth to do anything other than guaranteeing great salaries and benefits to its employees and wonderful honorariums to it politically appointed committee! No wonder citizens of Manitoba shun making any complaints, what is the use! Val Werier is to be commended for calling a spade a spade. Perhaps with more editorials like Val Werier's change for the better will come to the Winnipeg Police Service and a justice system in need of change. Many say though it will probably get worse before it gets better. Unless pressure is kept up, memories grow dim and that will be the case. Until change comes for the better Winnipeg and Manitoba make a lousy place to live and do business and for those saying otherwise, they should be looked at from the perspective of where they come from, either from vested interest, politics or just plain bought and paid for!
